I have been looking for some kind of internet service that allows stereo audio, Skype was out as it is in mono, tried searching for others, but found none that were popular, the thought of trying chat-roulette came as a surprise to me, so, I thought i would try it.
Edit: It USED to work!!! Now (end of July) when you preview the webcam the audio is on one channel only, I have no idea if this is due to an update from Flash player, or if Chat roulette have made changes to their servers, I have emailed them but no reply. It WAS so much fun doing it at the time, and I have gained a few extra followers from doing it on the Chat site..
Well, for the most, as some people said that the left ear was heard through both left and right headphones.
I have found by using NellyMoser at 44KHz works very well for those who have this enabled already, for those that change to the codec while “in chat” some have not noticed any difference – not sure why that is. The default CODEC is “Speex” which is a very low bit-rate audio stream which is totally useless for binaural audio as it is probably MONO, and max 16KHz.
Frank is finding more followers by using Chat-roulette and those people are very positive about the experience. I have noticed no one smile on chat-roulette … it is a very difficult site to show this kind of thing… some ask “whats that” and before an answer can be given, they’ve clicked the “next” button, bazaar! hardly anyone listens to you, most just sit there looking quite sad really, others are exposing body parts, others are doing their best to get a negative response by shoving two fingers, or just the finger, I am not bothered about that sort of thing and joke about the poor people who have lost their fingers.
I have had one lady burst into tears because he – Frank – was scary, and I was putting on a low deep voice for effect too, having said that, a few people think “Frank” is quite scary with the balaclava on. One chat insisted that you can’t get stereo on the site, and after changing the CODEC to good old Nellymoser, his eyes nearly popped out of his head! Quite a few people have said “you can’t get 3D with sound” – not their fault in being wrong here, not being informed and just using assumptions is the way most people think anyway so it will not put me off, as I am quite aware that you can get 3D sound, else this blog would not exist and we would have holes in the sides of our heads rather than hole flaps.
The people who actually are interested into knowing what it is I’m doing are rewarded by a experience of sound that completely wows them, awesome! cool! eyes dart from one direction to another, mostly with a huge grin on their faces, it is very rewarding to see this happen, as most who wear headphone are not expecting to hear it in the way that they do hear it.
I hope to compile a video of “first timers” – those that have not heard binaural recordings before –
of course I could get quite bored with doing chat-roulette before that happens, but who knows?
Loads of ideas come to me on how a simple dummy head microphone could and would benefit those who, say could not attend a concert, a play, or anything! even the Forrest sounds for that peace and tranquility that sometimes we find rest-bite with.
I may upload a youtube video on this sometime in the future,
For now.. seeya!
